Dema
Dema, (known formally as The Sacred Municipality Of Dema) Is a member of the United Vialists and is the largest city of the United Vialists. Dema not only serves as the economic capital of the Federation, but also serves as the interim capital of the federation as the new capital is being built. Dema lies along the Bishop River, and lies at the delta of the Bishp River, and River of Angels. Dema is a strategically pointed city as it falls along several trade routes and the geography of the area is quite rich in natural resources. Dema is run by whbilbo
History
In the mid 1700s European settlers came upon a rugged landscape with many mountains and trenches, upon arriving at the delta where the Bishop and River of Angels meet, a carriage carrying a priest lost control and the priest fell into the trench and died. Thus the River Of Angels got its name. In the weeks after the settlers started to colonize the fertile lands on the main island where Dema is situated, indigenous tribes known as the Vetomo people (a branch of Ojibwa first nations) interacted quite well with the European colonizers, and conflict was out of the question. In the late 1700s following the revolutionary war of the United States, Vetomo Landing- (present day Dema) was a prosperous treading stop with a population of around 15,000; a quite high population for the time and the native and European bond was still quite strong. at the time the indigenous medicine wheel was on the Vetomo Landing's flag with the background of gray. in the 1800s, Dema suffered some loss during the war of 1812, as it situated on the British side of north america and several soldiers from dema were sent away to fight and most didn't return. in the late 1800s, the population of Dema hit 89,000 and the city built some of its first buildings- some of which can still be seen.
The 1929 Division Act
In the run up of the 1929 election, Ellis Bordeaux, the head of the Rose party of Vetomo Landing,(a more right wing religious group) divised an idea to have the land split into three municipalities, the main island would be come Dema, the western valley ridge would become Vetomo, and the southern plateau which was more impoverished would become Vetomo Sud. many scoffed at the idea of a division as then many businesses would run out of business as taxes across municipalities would become higher in lower income areas and lower in Dema. Public Polls thought Bordeaux was insane and incompetent to run, however following the Collapse of the Stock Market two days before the election on October 29 1929, and Bordeaux's plans to save the area from complete ruin, many voters swung to the right in a 92% Majority Win in the Dema Senate. On November the fifth, the new Senate was sworn in for its third ever session, and the new 22 senators had begun the process to divide Dema apart. On November the 18th, Bordeaux called for a massive media conference and he announced the plans for division to begin at midnight the following day. On November the 20th, citizens woke up to see new flags in their districts, new signs welcoming them into certain parts of the region, and new information for taxes, laws, and amendments in public spaces. the begining of the divsion sat well with most citizens as the polls for the weeks around it were quite high in the mid 80%. around this time the population of the region hit 230,000 with a majority of citizens (125,000) living in Vetomo Sud. However, in 1938, 9 years after the introduction to the law, On September the 2nd, Jager Kalinson the head of the Council of Vetomo Sud had declared that the council was not satisfied with their treatment under the law, and had declared an Insurrection against Dema.
The Dema Conflict
Following the announcement of the Insurrection, the Canadian government sent $50,000 worth of military supplies to Dema and Vetomo to quash any possible rebellion in Vetomo Sud. Vetomo Sud got word of this outrageous ruse, and sent 4 men to attack the capital in Ottawa. three of the four men were arrested at the border, however one man made it through the border and traveled 120 km north to Ottawa and detonated a barrel of gunpowder outside of the Tax offices where 29 were killed and 340 were injured following the blast that ripped through the city center. This act stunned the Canadian people and the government sent 5,000 troops into Dema to help with the additional 6,000 against the 9,000 in Vetomo Sud, and a full blown attack started on the night of September 5th 1938. In a matter of weeks, 500 had died on the Vetomo Sud side, and dozens on the Dema and Vetomo side. the conflict was mainly street warfare and battlefields were scarce, after a year of fighting, Vetomo Sud released chemical weapons on Vetomo's lower side and many citizens died. This crossed the line, and on October the 18th 1939, Dema launched a full blown air raid over Vetomo sud and the city center was destroyed buried under ash from burning buildings. This one attack caused over 1500 to die in a matter of hours , severely slowing down Vetomo Sud. the next three years of the war were quiet and fighting, while sporatic and often occuring in Dema central, didn't phase the populous. This was until April 20 1943 when Vetomo Sud had launched an invasion of 5,000 men into Vetomo's lower side and the army occupied Vetomo for a year until the conflict ended with Vetomo Sud being pushed back and one final airstrike against its rail routes caused the city and government to collapse and a surrender from Vetomo Sud. This Conflict ended on May 9th 1944 with 19,300 Dead, and thousands more displaced and injured in Vetomo Sud and Vetomo's lower end
The Peace Agreement of 1945
One year after the end of the Dema Conflict, the three municipalities came together to write a peace agreement which agreed that:
Vetomo Sud would change it's name to Salazar.
Salazar would have no say in the senate.
Salazar would have to pay $200,000 every year to help rebuild.
Vetomo would be armed under the Dema military.
Vetomo would have a say in the senate.
Dema would increase it's military spending and infrastructure.
Dema would Control the entire region to a degree.
Dema would have control over development in the region.
All three municipalities signed off on this and the Senate of Salazar was revoked, and their leader was replaced with a more moderate leader, Juliette Latandresse.
The November Crisis
Between May of 1945 and November of 1962, the region's development grew faster then anyone had predicted. businesses increased, education skyrocketed, the population exploded to a strong 1 Million in the region, and the economy and fracture were the best they were in almost 50 years. Dema grew enormously, and Vetomo while increasing its density mainly became suburban with over 350,000 living in the district. However, Salazar was struggling. following the peace agreements the ecnomy crashed twice, in 1946 and 1951 and the infrastructure that was being rebuilt by Dema was becoming too expensive to keep up and expand. During the 1960 election, previous First Minister Juliette Latandresse ran into several campaign issues such as lack of funding, and low voter turn out, her health was also quite rough as she had been sick for two years with constant migraines. During the final election debate on September 5th 1960 she collapsed on live television while discussing healthcare reform in Salazar, her opponants tried to help her up but she wouldn't move. The debate was cut off and regular broadcasting was continued, that night she died after suffering a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Two days later on September the 7th, the election was held, and the leader of the Liberation For Salazar Party Donald Grovers won with 99% of the vote. This result stunned Dema's lawmakers and worried many in the community, as the last time a politician won with that much force the first conflict began. Over the next 15 months, Grovers went about his ministry with economic reforms that abided to the Dema laws, and also implemented spending budgets and mass transit. However, in early 1962 he introduced the Defense Act, which allowed Salazar to build its own deference if there was a threat to the country. at this time the Cuban Missile Crisis was treated as a high risk threat and Grovers abused the policy to add hundreds of thousands of dollars and tens of thousands of troops to be deployed. Dema officials and Vetomo leaders panicked and the Canadian government put their military on standby. War was afoot. and on Nov 11 1962, an all out invasion from Salazar occurred. 10,000 troops were deployed into Dema's Joseph Island and ransacked the city and destroyed block after block and held the island hostage, 5,000 were sent to Vetomo and raided the lower districts. Salazar also sent a wave of bombers over Dema central and many parts of the city were damaged. Around this time, Dema's attitutde shifted from the neutral to the extreme. A spiritual revolution had dominated the city over the late 50s, and a more authoritarian rul from Salazar put the revolution to a test. Within three months of the Invasion, Dema fell to Salazar, and Vetomo became the active battleground. Canada set up military brigades on the outskirts of the city ready for war, and the next few years would change everything
The Occupation
During the 27 Year long occupation, life in Dema became rough. Many schools were closed out of fear that the curriculum would go against Salazar's beleifs, and many businesses fled the city out of ear of being destroyed. The Occupation at first was rough for the citizens but as laws were introduced from Salazar's government, many adjusted. Laws put in place changed Dema and Vetomo's looks and character, many laws denied basic rights to those who wished to travel outside the region, while other laws decided what the city should look like. an infamous law was the Design and Unity law which called for central Dema to be one pure style of buildings, Brutalist. this allowed Salazar to build at their own time and do whatever they wanted to the city. The beliefs were that Salazar could grow and become more pleasing to the eye as Dema would lose everything it held dear because of how conventionally unattractive the city became. Following the rebuilding of many streets and complexes. Dema's citizens wanted freedom of expression and press which was eventually granted, however they would have to move to Salazar to keep their rights in check.
The Beginning of the End
In 1988, the First Minister of Salazar Donald Grovers became quite sick and quite unpopular following reforms to allow a campaign of fear to take hold of Vetomo, and he died when a letter bomb exploded in his house killing him in the process. Following his death at age 78, the second in charge, Yurko Stanza, became the youngest ever leader of Salazar at the age of 51, She campaigned on a policy of reforms that allowed many to be free and allowed more money to be given to Dema and for Vetomo to become a trading partner. These reforms ultimately worked and she was elected in the election later that year with 82% (1,382,272) of the vote being hers. Her love of Dema and Vetomo also rubbed off on citizens as those from Salazar traveled to the region more often and treated those from Salazar better then originally treated. On September 11th 1989 she announced that Dema's Inner Circle of leaders (The Bishops) had come to an agreement that Dema could have its rights restored and that all military, war, economic, and other sanctions and occupations be removed. This move caused celebration throughout the region, however, Stanza became a target of many hardliners who saw this as an act of defiance, and Stanza was termporarily held under Witness Protection in Dema's Covent Garden Neighborhood. The Period of War and Terror had been over, and the Dema Occupation had ended.
The Bridge
During the period of time between the 1989 End of Occupation and the 2019 Attacks, Dema retained a long term of peace which saw Development in the region explode. The population of the region grew from 3.3 Million in 1990 to 10.6 Million in 2019 and the economy of the region surpassed many cities including Kanata and Toronto. The physical region also exploded into a valley of glass and steel skyscrapers which peirced the sky, and bridges that connected all. this time from 1989 to 2019 was known as The Bridge, as the time from one rough era to another era was a bridge of peace and love and hope.
Changes
In November 2016 Salazar had its 14th Ministorial Election and a firey politician with hatred for the present and a love of Salalar's annexation policy David Crane won the election with a 65% Victory (1,827,537 Votes) Salazar started to slow down in development and became slowly more isolationist. This move did not go unnoticed and the region became quite nervous and tense, many from Dema and Vetomo became anxious that conflict was inevitable while those in Salazar who did not vote for Crane and his isolation party became wary and some even left the region. within weeks of winning the election, laws that suppressed many religious institutions and freedoms were placed into action. The Dema Council had requested that Crane resist and stop this campaign of hate or that he face the consequences. Crane continued these hostile moves including implementing a curfew on Dema and Vetomo Identification Card Holders to only 4 hours a day, and that Taxes be higher for those travelling from Dema and Vetomo, as well as immediate arrests for those who supported the other two cities openly. These reforms caused many incidents of hate and assault to those in Dema and Vetomo to skyrocket, and in January of 2019, Salazar organized a team of 10 men and women to attack Dema under the cover of terrorism from Quebec.
The January 11th Attacks
On The Morning of January 11th 2019, 10 Men and Women in several Delivery vans drove across the Angels Bridge into Dema to deliver an attack of massive proportions. The Vans traveled undetected as Bridge Security thought they were regular delivery trucks, however the current Policy to check Salazarian Trucks came into effect only a day after the attack the Vans traveled across the lower end of the city onto Park Avenue. these trucks went in a Relay set up from farthest first to cross to closest to cross last, these vans were sent in a pattern of: 2 Vans to Joseph Square, 2 Vans to the Dema Council, 1 Van to the Unity Totem, and 2 Vans to the DCI Headquarters On Frontenac Street. 627 Died and 2300 were Injured. Dema has since Dropped a Strong Weapon on Salazar, and Salazar has been Quiet. :D
