Early history

In 1736, a group of settlers from Montreal and Ottawa found land near Lake Champlain in what is current-day Vermont. After the United States was born in 1776, the settlers were rushed closer to the border of Quebec but did not get attention even after it's population reached 4000 in 1793. The settlement was then named Port Landing, after the name of a fort. In 1827 an inferno erupted, burning down 20 of the 120 buildings. killing 320. The settlement was renamed Portland in 1853, and was officially crowned as a city, and became independent from British run Canada, with the population reaching 19,388.
