The settlement was then named Port Landing, after the name of a fort. In 1827 a inferno erupted, burning down 20 of the 120 buildings. killing 320. The settlement was renamed to Portland in 1853, and was officially crowned as a city and became independent from British run Canada, with the population reaching 19,388.
