You Selected I want to add an image to an article with the VisualEditor (Change)

Firstly, make sure you're editing the article you want to add the image to using the VisualEditor.

Open Media Dialog

  1. Click the Insert button in the menu then select Media.

The next step depends on whether you want to upload a new image, or use an existing image.

Uploading a new image

You can easily upload images through the VisualEditor interface. Before you start, there are a few things you should check:

  • The image has a suitable name
  • The image is 2MB in size or less (if it's bigger, try an image optimiser)

Once you've checked these, you can upload the file

  1. Select the Upload tab of the Media Settings window.
  2. Drop the file onto the dotted area or click the Select a File button
  3. Check the box to confirm that you can legally upload this image
  4. Click the blue Upload button in the top right
  5. Make sure the name of the image describes it appropriately and optionally add a description
  6. Click the blue Save button in the top right
  7. Click the Use this image button
  8. Continue to Configuring Image

Using an existing image

If you want to use an image that has already been uploaded to the wiki, you'll need to know its exact name, including file extension (.png, .jpg etc.)

  1. Make sure the Search tab is selected
  2. Type the exact filename
  3. Your image will be the first entry, click it
    • Due to a bug with VisualEditor, if a file with the same name exists on Wikimedia Commons the wrong thumbnail will display. The correct thumbnail will be shown in the next step.
  4. Click the blue Use this image button
  5. Continue to Configuring Image

Configuring Image

  1. Enter a caption for the image
  2. On the Advanced Settings tab select how you want the image to be aligned
  3. Select the image type (see below)
  4. The image will be displayed at full size by default, you can optionally enter custom dimensions
